Forgotten Landscapes, Hidden Secrets – Andrew Burns ColwillFarfield Mill | Garsdale Road | LA10 5LW

As an artist, ‘Cumbria’ offers me an absolute wealth of subject matter and I have chosen to try and portray its incredible sense of age, and wealth of historic events, from the last ice age through to recent times. Cumbria and the area around Sedbergh feel to me like a spiritual playground for our ancestors, a place where Gaelic, Saxon and Viking peoples battled and bred, loved and lost, leaving us a unique landscape rich in history and secrets. For the first time I am working with a faster and more intense brush stroke, I find it suits the feeling of enormity and power I am trying to achieve within the work. My basic technique has not changed, untreated canvass, Acrylic paints and various amounts of water to achieve the desired effect, a technique loosely known as soak and stain. I will be working predominately with mountains, waterfalls, trees, rocks and the rusty rivers that crisscross the landscape, sometimes disclosing a hidden world, a world not all of us can see.
