The Arts Society Wensleydale: Splendiferous furniture of the late 17th centuryMiddleham Key Centre | Park Lane | DL8 4RA
January 8 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
The magnificent Baroque court furniture of the late 17th Century is the subject of Janusz Karezewski-Slowikowski’s lecture. He explores both the skills and materials employed in design and construction along with the socio-economic significance of the furniture. Employing unique close-ups from Knole and elsewhere, Janusz considers the courtly ceremonial splendour and function of State furniture of the post-Restoration period. Inspired by French taste, the best examples of British craft skills successfully integrated form and decoration. In less skilled hands its “intolerable luxury and huge expense” led to vulgarity and bad taste! The wonderful gilded table in the photograph is by Daniel Marot now in the Mauritz House, The Hague.
