Join our expert Dales Volunteers on this 3 mile (4.8 km) walk to explore Grinton Moor and its fascinating lead mining remains. You’ll discover hushes, levels, flues and one of the finest smelt mills in the Dales. Lower Wensleydale Walk

Walk starts from Leyburn War Memorial (top of the market square) Led by experienced National Park volunteers this 7 miles walk takes in views of Pennhill and Bolton Castle, some lead-mining remains, the park grounds of Bolton Hall, and Wensley village. With a working life of more than 700 years the collieries have been the subject of previously unpublished documentary research by the late Les Tyson and new detailed measured earthwork survey carried out by Ed Dennison Archaeological Services Ltd. Shaun will draw on both of these to give an outline history of the pits, focusing particularly on the structures associated with raising the coal by horse power.
