Also known as raised work or embossed work, stumpwork was only coined when the Victorians renewed its popularity. Not to be confused with appliqué, the various elements of stumpwork are often worked off the frame in the form of slips and then attached to create the final three-dimensional piece. Come and enjoy a day creating a beautiful stumpwork primrose. We will work the petals and leaves before making up into a single flower presented in a glass jar.

On this course you can spend two days learning to forge a traditional blacksmith bushcraft knife. It will involve basic blacksmith techniques for one part of the knife and silversmithing techniques for the other. You will learn how to temper, heat treat and sharpen using files. Les and Sue Knight will host a lichen ‘drop in’ between 2pm and 4pm in the Museum. You will be able see and handle specimens, look at them under a microscope and learn how these slow growing, long lived organisms, formed by a symbiotic partnership between a fungus and an alga, can be used to understand historic air pollution from smelting in Swaledale and Arkengarthdale.
