Harvest Festival Weekend

‘Keld – The Decline of an Upland Community from 1870 – 1970’

At the end of the 19th century, Keld,despite its smallness and remoteness, had a thriving community life: it boasted two chapels, a village school, a public house, a literary institute, and a brass band. Over the course of the twentieth century, and especially since 1950, most of these organisations and activities have withered and died. This lecture, by local historian Duncan Bythell, will consider the causes and chronology of the decline of Keld as a community.

A  4 mile (6.4km) walk along the River Ribble to explore the legacy of the industries which depended on the river in the past. We will visit the Craven Limeworks and Langcliffe, a quiet village with a surprisingly violent past.
