Historic butter-making photographs

We’ve already shared some of ethnographer Werner Kissling’s photographs of cheese-making on this blog and now we have had a sequence showing butter-making on the same farm in Swaledale in the early 1960s digitised for us by the people over at Leeds University Library.

The sequence shows Mrs M E Scott of West Stonehouse Farm in Swaledale making butter in her farmhouse kitchen starting with the milk being ‘siled’ or sieved into a copper cheese kettle and ending with the shaped butter pats being stamped.

We’ve edited the photos along with Werner Kissling’s original captions into a short video which you can now view on YouTube.
