Landscape architect and garden historian Marilyn Elm explores the origin of the Modernist style of garden design. The approach emerged in Europe and the USA in the 1920’s based on developments in Art and the Bauhaus design principle of integrating form with function. This rejected the idea of decoration and emphasised the amalgamation of house and garden as a single living space. Toby Faber, a grandson of the founder of Faber & Faber, explores, through slides and personal anecdotes, the book covers, design principles and key figures in the company's history. Artists employed as cover illustrators ranged from Rex Whistler and Barnett Freedman to Peter Blake and Damien Hurst.

Gavin Plumley's lecture explores the influential and stimulating art that emerged from the chaos and deprivation of the aftermath of the Great War in German-speaking Europe. He examines painters such as Otto Dix and Max Beckmann, the influence of the Bauhaus on design, German cinema, and the phenomenon of Marlene Dietrich.
