YDNPA Dark Skies Events – 2019

The stunning dark skies of the National Park, so free from light pollution, are one of its very special qualities.

To celebrate, the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors National Parks – together with Nidderdale AONB – are teaming up to hold our fourth annual Dark Skies Festival from 15 February to 03 March 2019, with loads of great activities for all to enjoy.

Drop in to the Dales Countryside museum and our Visitor Centres over the Dark Skies festival and join in our arts and craft activities.  Activities will be taking place through out the day, so just pop in at a time to suit you, stay for half an hour or all day.

  • Make your own working telescope
  • Create Pom Pom Planets
  • Draw swirling galaxies and sparkling stars
  • Craft shadow planets and animals

Tuesday 26th February – Dales Countryside Museum, Hawes

Wednesday 28th February –  Malham Visitor Centre

Our National Parks remain some of the darkest places in England and we are excited to include this event, once again, as part of the Yorkshire Dales Dark Skies Festival 2019.

Dark Skies Festivals are all about discovering, learning and enjoying the night sky and the stars you can see as a result.

Cosmos Planetarium is an indoor, state of the art, fully digital, 360° immersive multi-media theatre experience.

Shows last approximately 30 minutes and include a virtual tour of the night sky where we might:

  • go thousands of years into the past or future
  • see all 88 constellations in the northern and southern hemisphere skies
  • see the wonderful ancient Greek and Roman constellation artwork.
  • zoom in on planets to see surface detail as well as their orbiting moons,
  • see nebula and star clusters in our own galaxy or fly out to other galaxies millions of light years away.

Sessions will be running throughout the day at

10.30am, 11.30am, 12.30pm2.30pm, 3.30pm and 4.30pm.

Adults £4, Children £3 (children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult).

Join us for a lantern procession through Freeholders Wood looking at the planet trail by lantern light. Bring the lantern you made at the workshop at Askrigg Village Hall on 3rd February, or one of your own creations. Torches only- no flames! Then warm up in Coppice Café with hot chocolate and snacks, included in the price for children participants. Booking essential. Please wear outdoor clothing. Under 16s accompanied.

This event is to give the children an opportunity to make different weaved crafts using reflective and glow in the dark materials.

The children will weave a space mat and create a galaxy to take home. Included in museum admission.
